Attitude fuels Series can-do

It has, by all accounts, spawned another tradition. District 51’s team travels this week to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the Big League World Series, where it makes its eighth appearance in 11 years. District 51 is the defending World Series champion. It has appeared in three title games in 11 years, winning championships last season and in 1996. It lost to Michigan in 2000. The team’s cohesiveness has been especially pronounced this season. PALMDALE – Kelsie Blankemeyer is among seven District 51 Big League softball teammates who at one point played together for perennial Golden League power Quartz Hill High. Others on the team played for less successful programs such as Antelope Valley and Palmdale. But during the summer months, none of that matters. “We get along on and off the field; we’re all really good friends,” Blankemeyer said with a smile. Third baseman Blankemeyer, an Antelope Valley College sophomore, is among five players competing on the Big League team for a third consecutive season, the result of a rule change allowing players who were 18 on Dec. 31 of last year to remain eligible. In previous years, the cutoff date was July 31. Pitcher Laura Calvert (Quartz Hill/AVC), first baseman Brooke Stix (Quartz Hill/AVC) second baseman/pitcher Nicole Torres (Quartz Hill/AVC) and catcher Rebecca Zapata (Palmdale) are the others. Outfielder Alaina Devenney (Quartz Hill) and shortstop/pitcher Johanna Ilejay (Palmdale) are among seven returnees. Calvert won’t join the team in Kalamazoo because of college enrollment obligations. Blankemeyer believes the team’s cohesiveness correlates directly with its success. “We communicate really well. It’s like we know what each other’s thinking when we’re on the field,” Blankemeyer said. “When someone’s down, we know how to pick each other up.” The benefits extend beyond moral support. “There’s a comfort zone when you’ve played with each other and … you know how everybody hits and their habits,” longtime District 51 manager Walt Patison said. “The on-deck batter can tell the next batter, `Hey, you’re pulling your head,’ or `You’re dropping your shoulder.’ ” Zapata said teammates take pride in making newcomers feel welcome, too. “It helps the team when you feel comfortable with your teammates that you have,” Zapata said. “We let everybody in, so it’s not like there’s a `clique factor.’ ” Patison said creating that environment figures prominently in the selection process. “We don’t just look for talent,” he said. “Of course, we want talented players, but we also look for attitude and we look for character because that’s what you’ve got to build on. They’ve got to get along, so attitude and character is No. 1. Talent comes in after that. I won’t have a girl who won’t get along with the team or thinks she’s better than anyone else. I don’t care who she is.” It is especially important considering the team has players from seven area high schools (all six Golden League schools, and Paraclete). “The beautiful thing to me (is) that they can play against each other and pound each other all year long and then they can come together and be one solid team,” Patison said. “That’s what’s always been special about this team.” gideon.rubin@dailynews.com (818) 713-3607160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. 2 women win $3.5 million in case of shelter’s abuse

The women, whose names were withheld because of the nature of the allegations, claimed they endured molestation ranging from fondling to intercourse after being placed in the shelter. A nonemployee who lived at the home and was married to a houseparent molested both girls for about 1 1/2 years in the late 1960s, according to the suit. A male houseparent had sex with one girl when she was 15 in the 1970s, the suit claimed. The children were “under 24-hour care by the people who were supposed to be protecting them,” LippSmith said in a telephone interview. POMONA – A jury awarded more than $3.5 million to two women who claimed they were molested decades ago while living in a Masonic shelter for children, a lawyer said Thursday. A Superior Court jury found on Oct. 6 that Masonic Homes of California was liable for the actions of an employee and a man who lived at the Covina facility, said Graham B. LippSmith, an attorney for the plaintiffs. The women were among 14 people who have sued, claiming they were sexually abused while living in the San Gabriel Valley home east of Los Angeles. Trials are pending in other cases. Calls seeking comment from the Covina facility and the attorneys who represented Masonic Homes were not immediately returned Thursday. last_img read more

‘Wayne Rooney is up there with the England legends’ – Three Lions star retires

first_imgJamie Carragher believes Wayne Rooney should be regarded as an England legend following his former teammate’s decision to retire from international football. The Three Lions’ all-time leading goal scorer has called a day on his international career after netting 53 goals across 119 appearances for his country.READ MORE: Wayne Rooney retires: England’s record goalscorer quits international footballRooney, who has enjoyed a bright start to his second spell with boyhood club Everton, was set to receive a recall to the senior squad by England boss Gareth Southgate. But despite Southgate wanting to reintroduce the 31-year-old back into the international fold, Rooney has decided to go against the wishes of the Three Lions boss. And Carragher believes Rooney – for all the criticism he has received throughout his time with England – should go down as one of the country’s all-time greats.“I understand why he sometimes gets criticism,” Carragher told Drivetime.“He was a name along with Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and David Beckham, when we never got to level we should have as a squad.“But it goes more on Wayne because he’s a big name player. When you go as a squad to a tournament, one man can’t determine how the rest of the squad performs.“He’s one of the few England players who you can actually say has had a great tournament. You can probably name five or six and Wayne Rooney is part of that gang in 2004.“But if you’re your country’s leading goal scorer and your record is one goal every two international games, I think you’ve got to be saying he’s right up there with the England legends.”Listen to the full interview with Jamie Carragher on Drivetime above.?last_img read more

This is why Callum Wilson can make England’s World Cup squad

first_imgCallum Wilson has an outside chance of making England’s World Cup squad, according to Tony Cascarino. The 25-year-old Bournemouth striker scored a hat-trick in his side’s 4-0 win against Huddersfield, which were his first goals in the Premier League since an operation on a devastating knee injury.Serious knee ligament damage suffered in January sidelined Wilson for nine months, having recovered from a similar problem sustained in September 2015.But if he can maintain his fitness and get a run of games for Bournemouth, Cascarino thinks he has a good chance of making Gareth Southgate’s team for Russia.“He’s got fantastic quick feet and if you give him a chance he will convert,” he told the Weekend Sports Breakfast.“He’s got close to a one in two goal ratio for Bournemouth, which is really good.“Jermain Defoe coming to Bournemouth, being an England player and someone who has played at the top will help Calum.“The problem he has is will he stay clear of injury? Because he is the one dark horse that I really believe can make the England [World Cup] squad.“If he gets a run of games Calum will score goals.”last_img read more

Officials at the District Attorney’s Public Integrity Division found the city did violate the Ralph M. Brown Act when it voted the item, which was not on the council agenda, in September. While Wal-Mart officials could not be reached for comment, City Attorney Peter Wallin said Flournoy’s accusations are untrue. “The issues he’s raising are just not worth the time spent on them,” Wallin said. “If it’s an attempt to close down the Wal-Mart, he’s not going to succeed in that.” So far, four lawsuits have been filed against the city related to the Wal-Mart. Two of them – one from Garvey School District and Save Our Community, a group of Wal-Mart opponents – accuse the city of approving the 210,000-square-foot building without following properly the California Environmental Quality Act. ROSEMEAD – The now-open Wal-Mart Supercenter has spurred yet another lawsuit against the city of Rosemead, according to court documents. The lawsuit, filed by Rosemead resident and Wal-Mart foe Jim Flournoy, is an amendment to one filed last year, accusing the city of ignoring earthquake zoning laws before approving the big-box retailer to build on a lot on Walnut Grove Avenue and Rush Street. The amended suit, which was filed Dec. 11, also alleges the city has has broken open-records laws and ignored building codes. “The city never responded to it,” Flournoy said. “We were hoping they would, and we’re running out of patience so we refiled it.” Flournoy alleges the city is constantly ignoring the Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zoning Act – a state law passed in 1972 to make ensure buildings are safe for human occupancy – not just the Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart, he said, is just an example. Councilwoman Margaret Clark said Flournoy’s barrage of lawsuits is tiring and she hopes he could spend his energy elsewhere. “The city needs to get down to the business of the city,” Clark said. Councilman John Nu ez said the council relies heavily on the engineering department for guidance when it comes to proper protocols regarding buildings. “I’m sure whatever studies we thought they should be having are the studies that have been done,” Nu ez said. “If there’s something we didn’t do, we want to make sure they are done.” christina.esparza@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2472160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Wolves extend unbeaten run to nine league games with draw vs Sheffield United

first_img Ian Holloway thinks Arsenal have made a mistake in hiring Mikel Arteta Getty Images – Getty Ten minutes later, Wolves were level. Jimenez collected the ball in the right-hand channel and clipped a cross to the back post where the unmarked Doherty stooped to head past Henderson. The Blades were not disheartened, though, and responded well as McGoldrick floated a header agonisingly wide when it looked like he would register his first Premier League goal for the club.Neither manager settled for the draw and although the hosts arguably had the better of the closing stages, Wilder’s team stood strong. Oli McBurnie was unable to get his header on target at full stretch in stoppage time. Steve Round reveals how Mikel Arteta convinced him to join Arsenal staff Strugglers Wigan hold Blackburn to goalless draw in Championship Chris Wilder’s team had chances to extend their lead and they were punished for failing to take them when Matt Doherty headed home an equalising goal in the second half. The point means Tottenham hold on to fifth spot, but Wolves extended their unbeaten run to nine league matches while the Blades are now without a defeat in seven games and remain unbeaten on the road this season.Max Kilman was handed his full Premier League debut for Wolves – the 22-year-old defender got his chance with Romain Saiss suspended. The Blades made two changes as Dean Henderson and John Egan were both restored to the starting line-up.Henderson, on loan from Manchester United, was ineligible against his parent club last weekend and he replaced Simon Moore in goal. Defender Egan missed the 3-3 draw with United due to a head injury.Kilman’s inclusion meant 10 of the Wolves team had began both the victory at Bournemouth last weekend and the draw with Braga in Portugal on Thursday night, and perhaps that helped to account for their slow start to the match as Mousset put the visitors in front after only 62 seconds. 2 LATEST George Baldock’s cross from the right was brought down by the Frenchman who then fired his shot into the bottom corner from eight yards out.A couple of free-kicks in dangerous positions, one resulting from a foul that saw Leander Dendoncker receive a yellow card with just three minutes on the clock, kept Wolves under pressure. However, Nuno’s side survived any further damage and would have been level after 13 minutes had Henderson not produced a fine save to tip Raul Jimenez’s powerful header over the crossbar. After the frenetic start, the game settled down. Neither goalkeeper was worked again until just after the half-hour mark when Rui Patricio denied Enda Stevens following a lovely reverse pass by David McGoldrick. The Blades missed a host of chances to extend their lead either side of half-time, and they would ultimately be made to pay.Patricio stuck out a foot to deny Mousset just before the break and, after Chris Wilder’s team had also started the second half on the front foot, the Wolves goalkeeper blocked an effort by McGoldrick with his legs.John Lundstram has been in good goal-scoring form of late but he wasted an opportunity and shot tamely at Patricio, before Mousset blazed a shot over the crossbar after 54 minutes. targets Chelsea fan arrested for allegedly racially abusing Heung-min Son Lys Mousset has scored in his past three games for Sheffield United update Matt Doherty levelled the score in the 64th minute LATEST FOOTBALL NEWS Pep Guardiola gives Man City injury update and talks Christmas schedule Getty Images – Getty Liverpool transfer news live: Mbappe latest, Lille star wants to join Reds in future Top scorer in 2019: Messi, Mbappe and Sterling trailing Europe’s top marksman appointed statement rookie error Spurs investigation into alleged racial abuse of Rudiger is so far ‘inconclusive’ latest stalemate 2 Wolves and Sheffield United both continue to enjoy fine runs in the Premier League after sharing the points from a 1-1 draw at Molineux. The winners knew they would climb up to fifth in the table and early on that looked like it would be the Blades, after Lys Mousset struck in only the second minute to open the scoring. Major drop in number of Irish speakers in Donegal, according to 2016 Census

first_imgA major drop in the number of Irish speakers across Co Donegal has been found in the latest 2016 Census.Deputy Pearse Doherty described the findings compared to the previous survey carried out in 2011 as “deeply alarming.”He said the decline is the clearest evidence yet that Government policy on the language has been a failure. The Census data shows that over the last five year period the total number of daily Irish speakers in the Donegal Gaeltacht fell from 7,047 speakers back in April 2011, down to just 5,929 last year.Speaking in the Dáil today in relation to the findings, Deputy Doherty said “The Taoiseach promised at least twenty times that the Official Language Act would be published – this hasn’t happened. Will it take place now in light of these latest Census figures?“The Joint-Committee on Irish, the Gaeltacht and the Islands was established – they wrote to the Taoiseach four times to attend the committee in order to discuss various problems – yet he declined on each of those occasions.“An Coimisinéar Teanga, Rónan Ó Domhnaill, said during Tuesday’s committee meeting that state departments and Ministers are breaking the law in relation to language schemes and, despite this, that it is being allowed to happen.
