London giants look to clinch last 16 berths

first_img0Shares0000PARIS, France, November 22 – Chelsea and Arsenal have enjoyed contrasting domestic fortunes recently, but both can seal their places in the Champions League last 16 with wins against German opposition on Wednesday evening.Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Norwich left the Gunners with ten wins and one draw in their last 12 matches.“We have some way to go to show that this is the right way,” said manager Arsene Wenger, sounding a note of caution. “Five weeks ago we were 17th in the league and I had to answer a question about whether I thought we would battle relegation.“At the time I said no but in football things change quickly. We are back in a stronger position.”Next they play host to Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund in a Group F showdown at the Emirates Stadium, where they have not lost in 25 matches in the group stages of the competition.Arsenal will be through to the last 16 for the 12th season running with a win, but they can expect a tough test against a Dortmund side who won 1-0 away to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga at the weekend.Mario Goetze scored the only goal in that game, and the 19-year-old will be the focus of much of the attention in North London, with Arsenal said to be keen to prise him away next summer. The game comes in the middle of a massive week for Dortmund, who entertain Schalke in a local derby on Saturday, but Jurgen Klopp’s side really need a win to keep alive their chances of advancing. In the other game in Group F, Marseille entertain Olympiakos in the knowledge that a win could be enough to take them through depending on the result in London. At Chelsea, the pressure on manager Andre Villas-Boas is increasing after they slumped to a third defeat in four Premier League games at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday. The Blues travel to Germany to face Bayer Leverkusen in Group E knowing that a win will see them through to the knockout stages of a competition that owner Roman Abramovich is so desperate to win.Their poor domestic form has led to suggestions that the Russian oligarch may once again look to appoint Guus Hiddink in a bid to rescue his side’s season, but Villas-Boas insists he is not concerned about job safety for the moment.“He didn’t pay 15 million euros to get me out of Porto and another fortune to get me out of Chelsea,” said the Portuguese in the wake of the Liverpool defeat.“I have said we have set out to build something new at this club and the club is committed to what we are building for the future.”However, Abramovich’s patience will be seriously tested if Chelsea slip up at the BayArena. In what remains a very open group, Valencia are currently third on five points, but a win against Belgian outsiders Genk at the Mestalla will keep them firmly in contention ahead of their trip to Stamford Bridge next month.Milan and Barcelona are already through from Group H, but meetings between the two clubs are always eagerly anticipated and Barca can clinch first place in the section with a win at the San Siro. The Catalans, who travel without the injured Andres Iniesta and the suspended Dani Alves, are preparing to come up against Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the first time since he left them last year.“It will be a very exciting, fantastic game,” the Swede, who missed September’s 2-2 draw between the teams at the Camp Nou, told“We will be playing against the best team in the world, without doubt.“Even when I left the team, I knew I’d left the best team in the world. But, for me and all the other parties involved, I think the best solution was to leave the club.“Given the results for both sides, it was the best solution.”In Group G, surprise package APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus can become the first Cypriot club to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages if they can beat Zenit St Petersburg in Russia.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Air New Zealand to axe Vietnam, suspend Tokyo flights

first_imgAir New Zealand will stop flying to Vietnam next year and is suspending flights to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to protect itself against “unexpected disruptions”.It will also reduce frequencies to Argentina and its recently opened route to Tapei as it grapples with a global problem affecting Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines powering its Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The airline has been flying to Vietnam on  a seasonal basis since 2016 and had already reduced the frequency from three flights to two a week. The changes were outlined in a letter from AirNZ boss Christopher Luxon to customers apologizing for what he labeled “an incredibly challenging year”.Luxon acknowledged that many of the airline’s customers had experienced disruptions and delays, rescheduled flights, unexpected aircraft replacements and overcrowded lounges. While there had been unexpected problems with weather and a ruptured pipeline, Luxon said the biggest issue had been the unscheduled maintenance issues with the Rolls-Royce engines powering its Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s.Air New Zealand has been caught up in a problem with Trent 1000 package C engines that has caused increased checks and maintenance affecting airlines worldwide.READ: Trent troubles to cost Rolls-Royce at least £1 billion. “This has meant that at any time up to five of our 13 787 Dreamliners must be grounded while the engines are serviced in Singapore,’’ Luxon said.“This has placed significant pressure on our whole interconnected network of over 3,500 weekly flights and I will be meeting with Rolls Royce management in London in a few weeks to further seek personal reassurance that all is being done to get our affected engines back in service as soon as possible.”The Kiwi carrier has leased three aircraft to offset the Dreamliner engine problems and staffed them with Air New Zealand crew, food and beverages.“We will also further protect ourselves from unexpected disruptions by stopping flying to Vietnam next year, suspending our services to Haneda in Tokyo and slightly reducing our frequency to Argentina and Taipei,’’ Luxon said.“These are big decisions to make but are vital to free up capacity and let us concentrate on delivering a better experience across the board.”Air New Zealand has also been struggling with increased traffic at airports due to what Luxon said was underinvestment by airport operators as well as long wait times at its call centers. The airline is adding 80 additional call center staff to cope with the wait times and is talking to airport chief executives to try and accelerate needed improvements. It had also invested in a lounge redevelopment program in Auckland and has upgrades planned at Wellington and several regional airports, Luxon said.last_img read more

Technology: One Third of Adults now Use Tablets

first_img34 percent of adults now say that they own a tablet computer like an Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Google Nexus or Kindle Fire, according to the Pew Research Center.Kathryn Zickuhr, a research analyst for Pew, said that “with smartphones, for instance, we’ve seen a very strong correlation with age where most younger adults own smartphones, regardless of income level. But when it comes to tablets, adults in their thirties and forties are now significantly more likely than any other age group to own this device.”Ross Rubin, principal analyst at Reticle Research, told NBC News that “tablets — at least in the post-iPad era — have been the fastest growing consumer electronics category from launch in recent history.”Bloomberg BusinessWeek quotes MIT Technology review describes the ever-increasing speed of adoption of new technologies: “Smart phones, after a relatively fast start, have also outpaced nearly any comparable technology in the leap to mainstream use. It took landline telephones about 45 years to get from 5 percent to 50 percent penetration among U.S. households, and mobile phones took around seven years to reach a similar proportion of consumers. Smart phones have gone from 5 percent to 40 percent in about four years, despite a recession. In the comparison shown, the only technology that moved as quickly to the U.S. mainstream was television between 1950 and 1953.”last_img read more

IPL: Virender Sehwag is happy with new-look Delhi Daredevils

first_imgWith India eliminated from the Asia Cup and just one Twenty20 International against South Africa in Johannesburg to come, the focus now shifts to the upcoming Indian Premier League.Delhi Daredevils skipper Virender Sehwag is very pleased with the changes in the team composition made by the 2011 wooden spooners, and said it would be an honour and a pleasure to play alongside three current and former international captains.”It’s an honour to be playing with the players who have captained their countries. They can always give me advice if I am going wrong, or suggest a bowling change or field setting that works. So it feels great to be playing with Mahela, Kevin Pietersen and Ross Taylor,” Sehwag told reporters at an event to launch his team’s revamped website here on Wednesday.”I have got (players who were) my first preference, and am happy to have a strong team. Some players will not be available for the first few games, so we will have to really play well.”Asked about the goals for the upcoming season, the flamboyant batsman said: “No one can set a target. We will try to play good cricket, give our 100 per cent. The most important thing, to start with, is to make the play-offs. From there on we will think. The first two or three games are very important, and then we take it forward.”Sehwag, who was rested for the Asia Cup, said while he was doing fine now, he missed being part of the dressing room when his idol, Sachin Tendulkar, got to his 100th international century.advertisement”The rest period is over and I am set to train, and play in the IPL. (But) I missed being in the dressing room when Tendulkar scored that 100th century,” he said. The 33-year-old defended the continued failures of the national team, saying it was a phase everyone went through. “It happens with every team across the world. There is also the home advantage which every team is taking now. The times will change for us. (In the Asia Cup) we beat Pakistan and Sri Lanka but lost to Bangladesh. They have the ability to beat any team,” he said. With the senior players under pressure to give way to youth, Sehwag was asked about his opinion on when a player should retire, and said: “It’s not like a job, government job where you have to retire at 60. A cricketer can retire at 30 or 60, it’s up to the player. Sanath Jayasuriya played till he was 42. I will continue to play as long as I am enjoying the game, contributing to the team, winning games for my country. Nobody can force a player to retire.”After Rahul Dravid’s retirement, Sehwag had paid tribute to the legend’s patience. Asked if it was a sign of things to come in his own batting, Sehwag replied in the negative.”I will not change my style of batting. (Regarding Dravid) he is too good, he is a good listener too. Patience is important even in T20s; you have to play out 120 balls,” he said.Sehwag also heaped praise on Virat Kohli for his outstanding performances on the Australia tour and in the Asia Cup.”He is a brilliant player. He has hit 11 ODI centuries and has not even played 100 matches. He has proved himself and no amount of praise is enough for him,” Sehwag said. The Daredevils also launched their website in Hindi, and Sehwag, who hails from the semi-rural area of Najafgarh on the outskirts of Delhi, said: “This season, my priority will be to interact with the team’s fans. I am happy and excited to see the Hindi website. I am from a rural area, I lived in Najafgarh for 26-27 years before moving to central Delhi. This will help us reach out to more people who can’t read or understand English in the village, and expand our fan base.”shreyas. [email protected]last_img read more

Why a Social Media Policy Is Stupid

Topics: Social Media Marketingcenter_img (This is an opinion piece. Feel free to debate in the comments.)And over the past couple years there has been a lot of discussion and writing in marketing blogs about it: David Meerman Scott has written about the Department of Defense’s policy, Todd Defren wrote about social media policies recently, Tamara Schweitzer gave some tips on, Charlene Li of Altimeter create a resource, Sharlyn Lauby blogged on Mashable, Beth Kanter wrote Got Social Media Policy?, and Jason Falls wrote What Every Company Should Know About Social Media Policy.  I’m sure I missed a ton of others, let me know if there are big ones missing. In all this discussion, I always felt uncomfortable telling people to create a social media policy.  We don’t have a social media policy at HubSpot.  But I didn’t want to recommend something against common wisdom for fear of getting virtually wacked by the social media mafia. But, enough is enough.  Let’s end the madness today.Social Media Policies are Unnecessary and DistractingI don’t think companies need a social media policy.  In fact, having a specific social media policy runs counter to the whole point of marketing and customer service.  No single channel of interaction is more important than others.  Social media is not something weird or different, it is just one of many ways your company interacts with people.  Giving social media its own policy implies that phone, email and in-person interactions are not important or less important.  If a customer sends you a message by carrier pigeon – dammit you should answer – even if you don’t have a “fowl messaging policy”.For example, if you have a store and a customer complains to a cashier about something, and your cashier yells at the customer telling her she is wrong, you’d fire the cashier on the spot.  Same thing if that happens on the phone or email.  No “policy” needed.  It just makes sense that you treat customer right.  You don’t have a “voice media policy” or an “email communication policy”.  And I say that if that same interaction happened on Yelp or Facebook, you should fire them too.  Even without a policy. In the B2B world, if you saw one of your employees drunk at a tradeshow and they said a bunch of disparaging things about a customer you’d probably fire them.  Again, no policy required.  So why is that different if they get a little tipsy and tweet something insulting about a customer?  It’s not.I think the best “policy” is to hire smart people, give them the right coaching and training, set the correct culture around customer interaction, and then punish those who misbehave.Rather than having a social media policy, if you feel like your company needs something, how about creating a communication policy that governs all communication, no matter what medium.Your thoughts on a social media policy?  Leave a comment below.Photo Credit: bookgrlFree Presentation: 27 Awesome Social Media Stats, Soundbites and Slides Don’t forget to share this post!
