PHOTO/Raymond MakhayaNAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 16 – KCB’s multiple title winning Head Coach Curtis Olago has been handed a 30 week ban with effect from June 6 following the completion of a judicial process that found him guilty of attacking match official and Kenya Rugby Referee Society Chairman Karimi Mwangi in 2016. The process, led by Judicial Officer Willy Ombisi, reads in part, “pursuant to R20.10.1(c), the Person is suspended from all Rugby activity for a period of 30 weeks, effective from the date of this decision (6 June, 2017). Meanwhile, Resolution Kisii’s Abel Mong’eni was handed a 34 week ban backdated to April 18th. Mong’eni was found guilty of attacking referee David Ng’etich at the close of the side’s KRU Championship 6-3 semifinal win over USIU on 8 April. The verdict, passed by Judicial Officer Bernard Itebete reads in part, ““The JC finds the defendant guilty and suspends the player for 34 weeks effective from 18th April 2017.Under World Rugby regulation 17.19.10(c), the sanction was extended from 24 to 34 weeks to take into account the off-season period when there are no matches where the defendant is scheduled to play.”Lastly, Thika RFC have been banned from using their home venue for 12 weeks following an incident in which a match official was attacked during a KRU Championship match in March. The ban was enforced following the team’s failure to uphold the spirit of the Laws of the Game (in breach of clause 1.2 of the Code of Conduct), promote the reputation of the Game and prevent it from coming into disrepute (in breach of clause 1.9 of the Code of Conduct) by not taking action about the incident on the alleged perpetrators and adversely affected the Game of Rugby (in breach of clause 1.14 of the Code of Conduct).-Courtesy KRU-0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Runner making push for university in A.V.

first_imgLANCASTER – State Sen. George Runner says Antelope Valley officials should form a new government agency to provide an advantage in seeking a state university for the area. A joint powers authority created by local cities, counties, colleges and schools would signal to state officials that the valley is serious in seeking a four-year college, provide a single voice for lobbying and hold the power for steps such as acquiring land for a campus, Runner said. “In order to be successful we have to have local governments involved,” Runner, R-Lancaster, said. Runner’s proposal for a Antelope Valley Higher Education Joint Powers Authority is an outgrowth of a renewed effort led by the Antelope Valley Board of Trade to convince state officials to open a California State University campus in the Antelope Valley. Antelope Valley leaders must make the effort to secure one of those, Runner said. “We want to make sure we are on that list. They don’t come to you because you deserve them,” Runner said. A joint powers authority headed by local elected officials would provide credibility for the effort, he said. It would be the first for higher education in California, although joint powers authorities operate all around the state. Local bus operator Antelope Valley Transit Authority, for example, is a joint powers authority by Palmdale, Lancaster and Los Angeles County. Logical voting members of the Antelope Valley Higher Education Authority would include Lancaster and Palmdale, Kern and Los Angeles counties, Antelope Valley College and the Antelope Valley Union High School District, Runner said. Besides trying to secure a state university, the joint powers authority could work on expanding existing higher-education programs locally or encouraging private universities to open new ones, he added. The 23-campus California State University system opened its newest college, California State University, Channel Islands, in 2003 in Camarillo. Before that, CSU, San Marcos, opened in 1988 in San Diego County as the first entirely new campus since the 1960s. California State University spokesman Paul Browning said the university system has no expansion plans, but added that expansion often occurs at the direction of state lawmakers or as satellite campuses become full colleges.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Board of Trade members are studying what sorts of educational programs a university – preferably a polytechnic institute like the state universities in Pomona and San Luis Obispo – should offer and where there is a square mile or so of land to locate it. They plan to have a college master plan ready next March to present to state education officials. The Board of Trade’s higher education committee chairman, Bob Johnstone, supports Runner’s proposal, saying the joint powers authority would fulfill the necessity to have elected officials’ guidance in what will be a political decision in selecting college sites. “To me I think that’s an asset,” Johnstone said of the authority. While university officials have set no timeline, local leaders believe two or three new locations will be picked over the next 10 years for two or three new California State University campuses. last_img read more

Mariachi Cobre Presents the Story of “Coco” Coming to Epcot

first_imgShare This! One of my favorite things to do at Epcot is to travel around World Showcase and catch the live performances that take place in each country. One of my favorite performers has to be Mariachi Cobre, who are a fantastically talented band that plays in the Mexico Pavilion. Well, soon, I’ll have one more reason to catch yet another one of their shows.Beginning March 6, just in time for the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival, Guests will be able to enjoy the story of Coco, courtesy of this award winning group. The talented Mariachi Cobre musicians will be joined by a pair of Folklórico dancers to tell the tale of Miguel Rivera, his love of music, and his journey to find what matters most, his familia. The dancers will perform to the music of the film and Miguel himself will even appear in the form of a hand-crafted puppet. This new Coco-inspired show will not be replacing Mariachi Cobre’s show. Instead it will expand their repertoire, who will also continue enchanting guests at the Mexico pavilion with performances of traditional mariachi music.last_img read more

Spencer/Columbus cruises to seventh win

first_imgSpencer/Columbus cruises to 7th winFor Hub City TimesMARSHFIELD – “Our defense was really great.” Those were the words of Spencer/Columbus Coach Jason Gorst issued in a written statement to the media after the Rockets defeated Cadott at Beell Stadium in Marshfield on Sept. 29, 51-0.That was an understatement. The Rockets outgained the Hornets 449-88; the S/C defense forced three turnovers and held Cadott to just 50 yards of passing offense and 38 yards on the ground.“The turnovers that Hayden, Jarred and Austin forced were pretty big”, Gorst added. One of those turnovers went for a touchdown, when Hayden Bauman recovered a Cadott fumble and returned it 43 yards for a touchdown, as part of a 35-point second quarter. The shutout win started with a 21-yard first-quarter field goal by Evan Dieringer, who was also recognized by Coach Gorst after the game. “I really appreciate his commitment to the team to play through an injury for us.”The second quarter began with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Jarred Mandel to Austin Bacon. Dieringer added the extra point to give the Rockets a 10-0 lead. After Bauman’s fumble return TD, Mandel scrambled for a 15-yard score to make it 17-0. Late in the quarter, Mandel again connected with Bacon on touchdown passes of 49 and eight yards, giving the Rockets a solid 38-0 lead at halftime. The Rockets found the end zone again midway through the third quarter, when Carson Hildebrandt scored on a 16-yard run. Will Gorst added a touchdown run in the fourth quarter, locking up the win for Spencer/Columbus.Hildebrandt led the S/C rushing attack with nine carries for 61 yards and a touchdown. Mandel was 9-for-11 for 173 passing yards and three touchdowns. Bacon was his leading receiver, hauling in four balls for 105 yards and three scores. Bacon also led the team in tackles with six, and had one pass interception. The Rockets will host undefeated Eau Claire Regis Oct. 5 at Ted Fritsch Field in Spencer. Kickoff is set for 7  p.m.last_img read more

The BBC Tinkers With Netvibes-Inspired Homepage

first_imgRelated Posts Tags:#Digital Lifestyle#web 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market The British Broadcasting Corporation quietly launched a beta version of their spiffed up new homepage last week. The new page, which the Beeb has dubbed a “lick of paint,” draws on a number of so-called web 2.0 design aesthetics: rounded corners, large fonts, big buttons, a soft color palette, and a liberal dash of AJAX.But most strikingly, the beta BBC page is comprised of drag and drop content modules similar to Netvibes or iGoogle (named in a blog post by BBC’s UX and Design head as inspirations). The site, says the BBC, was designed around the ideas of simplicity, personalization, and localization, as well a bit of nostalgia: the homepage prominently features an accurate analogue clock — the BBC was founded in 1922, after all, and the media network says that test users have found the clock, an “homage to the ‘golden days’ of analogue programming, bizarrely reassuring.”For now, the BBC site is using a cookie to remember user preferences, but the company plans to integrate the personalization options into a forthcoming identity management system to be launched sometime in January. The redesign was completed in a relatively short three-month period, and the BBC joins CNN, USA Today, and AOL News among major news web sites that have launched newer, more “web 2.0” designs this year. The BBC’s new design on the left vs. the old design on the right. In June we compared the redesign efforts from the aforementioned major US news web sites. Those sites tended to emphasize user interaction (via comments, voting, story submission, etc.) or audio and video, while the BBC is emphasizing personlization. Which method makes more sense? It probably depends on your audience. The BBC’s homepage serves users of not just their web site news service, but also their television and radio networks, so the portal route might make more sense. The BBC has a lot of content from various sources that users want to get to, and letting users define which content they see first may prove a popular feature. In general, the BBC’s beta site is much cleaner and easier to scan. The old (current) BBC web site is a mess of text links with no clear navigation. The new site still has a bit of navigation headache (i.e., I still have to dig through a block of links at the bottom of the page to get to the tech section), but because the content widgets can be personalized and moved, I can rework the page such that it shows me the latest tech headlines instantly at the very top.The new design also places a greater emphasis on search, making it more apparent how to find what you’re looking for, by placing a larger search box in a familiar place on the page. That is a vast improvement over the current situation, but I’d still like to see a cleaner, easier-to-navigate dedicated site navigation. It is interesting to note that this is not the BBC’s first attempt at personalization. Their myBBC service from 2001 was something like a stripped down, BBC-only version of MyYahoo! While myBBC ultimately didn’t pan out, something tells me they may have more luck this time around. Considerations when tuning your Intel Xeon Processor 5500 series based server?

first_imgThis blog post is meant to discuss some of the considerations for performance tuning your Intel® Xeon® Processor 5500 (“Nehalem-EP”) series based server. I’d like to do this by discussing the un-boxing process.Step 1. Place the box on the floorStep 2. Open the boxStep 3. Carefully remove the server.Step 4. Plug the server into a keyboard, mouse, and monitor.Step 5. Plug the server into the wall socket.Step 6. Power on the server.There. You are done tuning your Nehalem-EP based server for performance. “Really?” you ask? Well mostly. There are some considerations and I’ll discuss them. I can speak to this subject as I was asked to tune this class of system using the TPC-Cand TPC-Ebenchmarks.BIOS / Firmware / DriversIt is very important to remember to update your system’s BIOS, firmware, and OS drivers before you do any deep performance tuning. I cannot over state the importance of this step. Your system’s manufacturer should be able to provide the latest BIOS and firmware associated with your server. OS drivers are available through many sources these days. Typically these can be downloaded from OS vendors, hardware vendors, from the Linux open source community, or the platform’s manufacturer.A good example of this is the SATA driver associated with the ICH10. The ICH10 is part of the chipset that supports Nehalem-EP. I recommend going to Intel’s website and using the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver for the SATA controller.Understand your systemLast year, Nehalem launched for the desktop market segment. Now it is time for the server market. The Nehalem-EP processor is meant to be used in dual processor (DP) socket systems. Nehalem-EP is the follow on to the Intel Xeon Processor 5400 (“Harpertown”) series. However, Nehalem-EP is really very different from Harpertown. The Nehalem-EP processor is based on the Intel Core i7. The Nehalem-EP processor inherits the same architectural features as the Intel Core i7. Once you understand these features, then you can better tune your system for performance. L3 Cache:Nehalem-EP uses a level 3 cache. Depending on which SKU you are using it can be 4MB or 8MB in size. If you are interested in performance, then I would encourage you to pick the larger cache size SKU. Hyper Threading Technology:If some threads is good then more threads is better. This is where Hyper threading technologycomes in to play. Nehalem-EP provides this technology out of the box. So, on a typical DP server this will give your system 16 threads of processing goodness.Intel Quick Path Interconnect:Nehalem-EP supports a CPU interconnect known as Intel Quick Path Interconnect (QPI). This interconnect is the replacement for the Front Side Bus of old. QPI provides a point to point link to each of the processors and the Intel X58 chipset. The Nehalem-EP supports QPI speeds of up to 6.4GT/s. This provides a theoretical bandwidth of 25.6 GB/s. This is a welcome shift for Intel’s designs for the future.Turbo Boost Technology:As with the desktop SKUs of Nehalem, the Nehalem-EP supports Turbo Boost technology. This technology will run the CPU at a higher frequency than its rating. It will increase the frequency in steps of 133MHz until it achieves its upper thermal and electrical design requirements. Turbo Boost Technology is dynamic. In other words, the processor will decrease its core frequency if the temperature is too high. If your application is sensitive to core frequency changes and does not fully utilize all cores, then it may benefit from this technology.Integrated Memory Controller:Another key feature of Nehalem based processors is that they have the memory controller integrated into the processor. This allows for much lower memory latencies. The Nehalem-EP supports three channels of DDR3 memory. It is important to talk about DDR3 memory and population on Nehalem-EP based servers. As mentioned before Nehalem-EP supports three channels of memory and supports 800, 1067, and 1333 MT/s memory speeds. Those speeds are dependent on how many channels are populated with DIMMs. For instance, 1333 MT/s is supported in a single DIMM per channel configuration. 1067MT/s is supported in a single DIMM per channel and two DIMMs per channel configuration. 800MT/s is supported in all configurations. These speeds are based on dual ranked DIMMs. If you plan on filling up all the memory slots with as many DIMMS as possible you will end up running at 800MT/s. So, here is the consideration. Does your application need all that memory or could it use less memory running at a higher speed? If the answer is yes to the latter, then perhaps running two DIMMS per channel at 1067 MT/s is the best configuration. To wrap things up here, we have looked at the new and Nehalem architecture, the importance of BIOS/ firmware/ OS drivers, and memory population. Your application’s performance will vary, but I hope I have given you some things to narrow down your performance testing. Thanks for taking the time to read this blog post. For more great performance methodology tips please check out Shannon Cepeda’s blogposts on performance tuning.last_img read more

Angel Di Maria signs 4-year deal with PSG

first_imgMoving on from his English Premier League flop, winger Angel Di Maria signed a four-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain to complete his transfer from Manchester United on Thursday.Di Maria, who struggled to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League during his one-year spell at Old Trafford, said he was wanted by clubs other than PSG, but was impressed by the depth of its ambition to win a first Champions League title. He won the Champions League with Real Madrid last year, and was man of the match in the final. Still recovering from a thigh injury, he is not available for the French league opener on Friday at Lille, and said in a Parisian palace conference room packed with journalists that he will need “two or three more weeks” of recovery before making his debut. He will be introduced to the home fans on Aug. 16 against Ajaccio. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press this week that Di Maria joined for a fee in the region of 63 million euros ($69 million).United paid 59.7 million pounds for him last summer, the most expensive signing in the history of British football. But after scoring just three goals in 27 Premier League appearances, United and Di Maria decided mutually to part.”Leaving United was not only my decision,” he said. “I’m here because they wanted to sell me, it was a collective decision.”PSG lost out to United last season because of Financial Fair Play restrictions that have since been eased.advertisementNow, PSG have made him the second most expensive player in French league history. He will team with Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, who joined PSG for a reported fee of 64 million euros when the club broke the French transfer record in 2013. He will also be reunited with Argentina teammates Javier Pastore and Ezequiel Lavezzi.”Lavezzi has been telling me that PSG is a fantastic club,” he said. “One of the factors that brought me here is my friendship with Lavezzi.”Since Qatari investors took over in 2011, PSG has spent heavily to build one of the most expensive teams in world football. The investment has taken a while to pay dividends. Laurent Blanc’s team secured an unprecedented domestic treble last season, but has repeatedly failed to advance beyond the Champions League quarterfinals, losing 5-1 on aggregate to Barcelona this year.”We’ve got the team to win the Champions League,” PSG president Nasser Al Khelafi said. “With Angel Di Maria we will continue our European dream. We are close to achieving this dream, we will try this year. He is a big plus to our club.”last_img read more
